The Moving Bed Bio Reactor (MBBR) is a highly efficient technology commonly employed for treating domestic and industrial wastewater biologically.
While most MBBR systems worldwide use plastic carriers coated in biofilm to break down waste, Reiken Solutions has developed MBBR systems utilizing Biochips.
Over decades of experience and innovation, our Biochips have become durable and lightweight carrier materials with protected pore structures evenly distributed to offer an ideal environment for the microorganisms essential to the activated sludge treatment process.
In the domain of wastewater treatment, the chip-shaped high-performance biofilm carrier stands out, especially in terms of nitrification.
The carrier media surface, which can reach up to 5,500 m²/m³ (1,677 ft²/ft³), provides an intricate pore system that optimally shields the delicate nitrifying bacteria from external mechanical forces. In comparison, most competing products only offer between 500 and 800 m²/m³ (152.5 and 244 ft²/ft³).
Despite the low diffusion depth of substrate and oxygen, the bacteria are sufficiently supplied from both sides of the thin carrier (thickness: approximately 1.1 mm = 0.043”).
Benefits of the MBBR Biochip removal performance
The MBBR Biochip offers a superior removal performance due to its protected active surface area of up to 5,500 m²/m³ (1,677 ft²/ft³) compared to other solutions available in the market. Its self-cleaning feature ensures thin biofilms, which allow for optimal transfer of substrate and oxygen to the microorganisms, thereby improving the biodegradation capacity.
Clogging of carrier elements is a common issue in wastewater treatment. Thick biofilms clog the pores, reduce surface area, and hamper biodegradation. The Biochip’s unique shape and motion characteristics prevent clogging, as the carrier’s movement in the wastewater creates shear forces that abrade the biomass growing out of the pores, resulting in permanently thin biofilms and optimal transfer of substrate, nutrients, and oxygen.
The high biodegradation performance of Biochip carrier reduces the required volume of carrier media, resulting in a smaller reaction tank footprint. This advantage, coupled with the superior removal performance, makes the Biochip carrier an attractive solution for wastewater treatment.
